"ex-Nathan Milstein"
Ansaldo Poggi was the greatest modern Italian violin maker of the 20th century. After the World War II, he put his heart and soul again in violin making in his hometown, Bologna.
However the Italian economy was in the hardship in the aftermath of the war, so he had to move his atelier to Zurich for ca. 1946-1948, during which this violin was made. This fact was certified on the label on the violin. His outstanding talent was recognized by Bänziger (stringed instrument dealer) in Zurich, and the dealer promised to cooperate to sell his instruments in the local area, which helped him make a living.
This violin, made in 1947 in his second golden period, when he had sufficient confidence after leaving the influence by Fiorini, his teacher, and establishing his own style. Its purfling shows his original pattern, sculpted like long-slits. Every point from the body to the scroll was beautiful and elaborately made. Its splendid sound is not only graceful but also powerful.

In the middle of 1920s, after studying at Fiorini’s atelier in Zurich, Poggi established his own atelier in his hometown, Bologna.
While still young, he challengingly applied for many luthier competitions, and continually received medals in 1923, 1925, 1927 and 1929, which period is so called his golden period.
Under an ordinary label, there is found another label saying “Winner at the international maker’s competition in Rome in 1927,” which gives us a presumption that this viola is a very precious one, made with the most special mind and care of all the small number of his violas. Its graceful form in Fiorini’s style and sharply-cut f-holes peculiar to Poggi show delicate touching by young Poggi.
