Joseph Gagliano c1785

Joseph Gagliano, called Giuseppe, was a craftsman of the Gagliano family, who established their violin-making tradition from the 18th to the 19th century.

He was born to the great violin maker Nicolò (1710-1785) as his second son, and came to be engaged in stringed instrument making with his brothers.

His younger brother Antonio (1764-1835) was his good partner. They collaborated in instrument making and each of their artwork holds a label with their names on it.

Generally his father Nicolò is recognized as the best maker in the Gagliano family. Some of Joseph’s artwork remindus of Nicolò’s characteristics with an elegant arch and red-brown varnish.

This violin of 1785 is an excellent piece of artwork with red-brown varnish, -that is one of his characteristics,- the scroll of heartfelt cutting, the attractive arch of the NaplesSchool, and graceful sound.
