Romeo Antoniazzi 1918
Romeo Antoniazzi was born in Cremona in 1862 as the eighth child by Gaedano Antoniazzi, who was one of Enrico Ceruti’s apprentices, and is said to have learned the basics of violin making from his father, Gaedano and his brother Riccardo. On the very early stage of his career, Romeo worked for some companies including Leandro Bisiach and Monzino and Sons, while which many instruments with his own signature were neither made nor survived until today.
The peak of Romeo’s violin making career started in 1885, and he establised his atelier in Milan in 1887. After 1904, he received gold and silver medals in exhibitions in Milan, Turin and Paris.
The Antoniazzi Brothers, Romeo and Riccardo, were very important violin makers who laid the foundations of the modern Milanese school. Intheir atelier, Giuseppe Pedrazzini (1879-1957), Ferdinando Garimberti (1894-1982), Piero Parravincini (1889-1957) and some other excellent violin makers were raised. Romeo passed away at the age of 63 in Milan in 1925.
This violin was made in 1918, taking in Stradivari’s model, clad in orange-brown varnish. Its woodwork offers steady feeling of richly experienced craftsmanship. Its sound is brilliant and deep and holds the quality performers will seek for.
