J.F.Pressenda 1837 “ex Shultz”
Here we introduce the violin by J. F. Pressenda, "ex Shultz” 1837.
Pressenda was a Turinese master craftsman, called the successor of
Stradivarius and del Gesu in the violin-making art. He started his own
atelier in Turin in 1821, working with excellent assistants including
Giuseppe Rocca and Pierre Pacherel, to make many fine instruments. His
artwork was highly praised among violinists in Turin while alive, evidence
of which is the fact that he received medals at exhibitions in Turin in 1832
and 1838, around when this violin was made. Its flat arch is one of its
characteristics. Besides, its deep, rich and powerful sound is worthy of
note.
It was used and loved by Gerhart Shultz for years, who is a conductor and
used to be a violinist of the Alban Berg Quartet for years. Sounds of this
Pressenda can be listened to in many recordings of the Alban Berg Quartet,
who was consistent in Viennese musical traditions while taking in
innovational musical expressions of the 20th century.
We will welcome you to visit us to take a close look at this celebrated
Turinese artwork of the 19th century.
